September 2014

Jared got his first brand new vehicle - a Nissan Frontier truck - this month.
Checking it out at the dealership in Logan.
We went to the big band performance of "Celebrate America." It featured many instrumentals, singing, and dancing - not to mention a great dinner.
Jared rode on the Brent Mortensen Lotoja relay team with us this year.  He rode Logan to Preston.  Here he is just about to leave.
 Waiting for the start.
I rode Preston to Montpelier.  Dave Mortensen rode Montpelier to Afton.  Brent rode Afton to Alpine Junction. And Melissa, Dave's wife, finished up with Alpine to Teton Village.  Here we are at the end.

Gayle and I stayed over with the Mortensens at their cabin in Star Valley, WY and got in a game of golf too.

 Pros!
We were saddened by the passing of our long time friend, Kevin Large, this month.  Some of our family were able to drive down for his funeral.  Here is a recent shot of the Large family.  Kevin, in the wheelchair, had PLL (Pro Lymphocytic Leukemia).
Jared and Dallin Large have been friends since pre-school.
Alicia and Kristy have been friends since pre-school too.
We've known the Larges since 1984.  Here are Nancee and Gayle - best friends forever.
On the Large's back lawn, looking at pictures of memories.

Dallin, Brit, Nancee, Kristy, and Nate at Eternal Valley Cemetery.

 Jared is definitely more handsome.
Brit got all dolled up for the Homecoming dance.
What a great head of hair!
 Another look at the hair.
 What a cute smile.

China Business Trip

In August I spoke at a technical seminar in Xi'an, China, and then spent the weekend there.  I then flew to Shanghai to attend and speak at a tradeshow.
Dragon Fruit was everywhere.  You peel off the segments and inside is a white fleshy part with small black seeds.
Here's the inside of the Dragon Fruit.  Similar texture to a Kiwi.  A lot to eat in one fruit.

Was able to visit the Terracotta.  This is just one of the three main buildings housing the soldier and horse figures being uncovered.  Amazing.
 What an incredible historical find.
I spent the weekend alone, so I got to walk around.  I took this shot of a statue, in front of a sculptured garden piece, in front of a fountain, with the pagoda tower in the background.
I stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Shanghai.  The hotel starts on the 54th floor of the tower on the left.  The one on the right is the 3rd tallest building.  The one with the blueish light has an open "keyhole" at the top.
My hotel was not far from this space needle, which had different colored lights rotating to music.
Same space needle from my hotel room.

Thrushwood House parting "shots" and Country Club pics

If you want to see family pictures, you can skip this posting.  These are shots of our former Thrushwood house, for memories' sake, and of our residence with Mom Parkinson on Country Club Dr.

From our "add-on" TV room at the back of the house.
Looking into the living room from our add-on, through what had been our French doors to the outside.
 Another living room view.
This had been Alicia's "dolphin" room.  She and Gayle decorated it after our move from California, to remind her of the ocean and dolphins.
 Jared's room downstairs.
The family room that became our exercise room.
The wood burning stove in the downstairs exercise room.
The front entrance way looking into the living room.
The "dining room" that we never used for dining, just off the kitchen.
Looking from the kitchen to where we normally ate.
Looking at the upgraded kitchen (new appliances).
Part of the basement common area that Gayle turned into an art display.
Looking downstairs from our third floor.

The upstairs guest bedroom (also for grandkids!).
Our upstairs living area with the pine trees showing through the windows.
Another view of the upstairs living area, from the TV.
 Upstairs fireplace.
The converted bedroom we used as a study.
Our bedroom with the antique dresser.
 Backyard hillside.
Looking at our backyard toward the Olsens' yard.

Our humble abode for 19 years.  Lots of memories tied up to this place.  The four small aspens that used to be on what became our berm have dwindled down to one sturdy quaky.

You'll perhaps recognize some of the furniture, transported to its new location.
Our bedroom used to be Patricia's bedroom; and prior to that, my bedroom until 1976, when I left for Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN.
 Another angle of our bedroom.
We removed the built-in desk and replaced it with a dresser.
The antique dresser just outside our bedroom.
 Robert's old bedroom.

Looking into the family room.

The "toy" section of the family room.
Our TV area of the family room.
Our piano's current location, in the family room.
The large walk-in closet, now a toy room, features a trundle bed used by grandkids when they stay over.

The hallway now features some of Gayle's artwork.

Our antique bookcase at the end of the hallway.
 Susan's former bedroom.
The old bulletin board on the wall is now gone.
And finally, the old storage room (affectionately called the ski room) was converted into our exercise room, complete with the flat screen HD TV.
